Memorial
Joan Baldrige, QQA Executive Director from 1975-78
1942-2023
We honor Joan Baldridge in this publication not only for her work as an Executive Director of our organization, but for her work in the larger preservation sphere. Joan, along side Starr Mitchell, was the first paid employee by the Quapaw Quarter Association. She was known for her talents in entertainment and hosting, and threw an almost world famous New Years Eve party, which she hosted at her home each year. Her early years with the Quapaw Quarter Association started as an Administrative Secretary. Throughout her time with the QQA she raised membership by almost 600 members, and was featured in preservation publications across the country.
Joan served as director of the Quapaw Quarter Association 1975-78, director of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program 1979-81, communications director for the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission 1983-89, and director of the Department of Arkansas Heritage 1989-93. In 1993 President Bill Clinton asked her to serve in his administration as assistant chief of protocol for the U.S. Department of State. She helped coordinate many official state visits for foreign dignitaries. She was part of the official greeting parties for presidents and prime ministers from many countries, including Ireland, Norway, Australia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lichtenstein, Thailand, Israel, India, Spain, and Japan.
Joan herself said, "My life was not always happy, but it was rarely boring."
